Still developing: I love Falls Creek

“Falls Creek! I love Falls Creek!” I was pumping fuel into my car’s gas tank when the woman on the other side of the pump yelled those words across to me. People don’t usually yell at me when I’m pumping gas, so it took a moment to understand why she was yelling. I have a red parking sticker on my car’s windshield that has the words “Falls Creek” on it. Unless I’m entering the gate at Falls Creek or looking for my car in a parking lot, I forget the sticker is there. “Do you work there?” she asked. I had a chance to share with her about my work with the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma and Falls Creek and to visit about her walk with the Lord since she had attended Falls Creek as a youth. Whenever the words “Falls Creek” are spoken in a crowd in Oklahoma, you can see the look on people’s faces change. They desire to share with you their story. They want to tell you how they went to Falls Creek as a camper, sponsor or cook and what church they went with and the cabins they stayed in. Some will talk about the heat, others the different tabernacles they remember, and some will get a misty look and share how they came to know the Lord at Falls Creek. People love Falls Creek, and they want to tell you about it. My daughter was wearing a badge around her neck attached to a lanyard that had the words “Falls Creek” printed on the cord. A friend at her school had noticed the words much like the woman at the pump noticed the words on my car. “I’ve been to Falls Creek,” he said to her across the lunchroom table. “I really enjoyed being there last summer. Why do you have that on your lanyard?” So my daughter had the opportunity to discuss Falls Creek and what I do for the encampment.  She was happy to talk about Falls Creek because, like the woman at the pump, she loves it too. My daughter spent many summers at Falls Creek when I was a pastor and now also since I am a staff member of the BGCO. I have been at restaurants, department stores, feed lots and quail hunts, and when someone finds out I work with Falls Creek they just have to tell their story. I have seen a little confusion and then awe in the eyes of family and coworkers as some men who normally show little emotion begin to tear up. As they begin to speak of their love for Falls Creek and all it has done for them and their families over many generations, it is a wonderful thing. February is the month we highlight love. What a great time to show your appreciation and love for Falls Creek by making a love offering to the camp so that future generations can experience the same opportunity you had to meet the Lord at Falls Creek. You can show your love for Falls Creek by sponsoring a seat in the tabernacle for $500 or by planning an estate gift in your will or trust. Why not give a portion of your income tax return this year as a love gift to the ministry of Falls Creek? Jesus’ conversation with the woman at a well led to her salvation. Just think…maybe your next conversation about Falls Creek, maybe with a woman at a gas pump, could mean another person comes to know Jesus as well. Please call 800-690-6933 for information about...
